Sarah Cardell

Sarah Cardell was appointed Chief Executive of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in December 2022. She is a member of the CMA's Board and leads the CMA's Senior Executive Team. Sarah previously served as interim Chief Executive from July 2022. Prior to this, she was the CMA's General Counsel (from September 2013), with responsibility for leading the CMA's Legal Service and Policy & International directorates as well as the CMA's Digital Market Unit. As General Counsel, Sarah served as the legal adviser to the Board. She joined the CMA from Ofgem (the UK regulator for electricity and gas markets) where she was the Legal Partner of the Markets Division, leading on competition law matters. She previously worked at Slaughter and May in London as a Partner in the Competition Group, advising across a wide range of EU and UK merger and antitrust cases.
