Jonathan Eastwood

Professor of Space Physics in the Department of Physics (Blackett Laboratory), Imperial College London
Jonathan Eastwood PhD is Professor of Space Physics in the Department of Physics (Blackett Laboratory) at Imperial College London, and Convening Co-director of Imperial’s School of Convergence Science, in the theme of Space, Security and Telecoms. He has worked extensively on fundamental space plasma physics, space weather modelling, and the design and flight of space instruments primarily for space weather monitoring. Prof Eastwood plays leading roles in a variety of international space missions, including Imperial’s magnetometer contributions to ESA’s Vigil Space Safety mission and HENON deep-space technology demonstration CubeSat.

A central theme of Prof. Eastwood’s work is contributing to the safe, secure and sustainable use of space as our reliance on space-based infrastructure grows, and the development of evidence-based policy in this area. He is a member of the core group of the Space Environment Impact Expert Group, including development of the reasonable worst case scenario for space weather which has significant impacts on the space debris problem. Furthermore, Imperial has, through his leadership of the university’s Space Lab network of excellence, published a series of evidence-based policy reports including ensuring the safety and security of mega-constellations, and their environmental sustainability. The School of Convergence Science builds on this momentum with its mission, in the area of space, security and telecoms, to ‘protect, connect and know our worlds’. In this role, Prof Eastwood is convening teams of experts and end users across academia, industry, and governments to address major mission-led challenges at the intersection of space, security, and telecoms.
