Jason Engel-McMaster is Chief Data Scientist at Elsevier, where he leads the company’s data science strategy and works across teams to develop innovative, customer-focused solutions for researchers and healthcare professionals. He joined Elsevier in March 2026, bringing extensive global experience at the intersection of data science, technology, and innovation.
 
Prior to Elsevier, Jason served as CTO and Head of the Innovation Lab at Citi, where he led multidisciplinary teams in applying machine learning and artificial intelligence at scale to transform business operations and deliver customer value. His career spans senior roles across finance, insurance, science, and legal sectors, giving him a broad perspective on how data-driven technologies can drive impact across industries.
 
Jason has been at the forefront of bringing generative AI into production environments and is a strong advocate for the responsible and ethical use of emerging technologies. He has also contributed to this field as a Trustee of the Institute of Business Ethics.
 
A lifelong technology enthusiast, Jason is equally passionate about global exploration and photography, having travelled to more than 80 countries. His adventures include helping to build a school in Rwanda and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in support of charitable causes.
