Dr Alex Barber

Fellow, Advisory Board Member, Earth & Space Sustainability Initiative (ESSI) & Royal Astronomical Society
Dr Alex Barber undertook his medical training at St Bartholomew's and The Royal London.  He is a medical leader with 25 years of frontline NHS experience in primary, secondary and tertiary care.  He continues to work as a GP in Accident and Emergency at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. His academic foundation in Neuroscience prior to medicine coupled with training and post graduate qualifications in Anaesthesia(FRCA), Medicine (MRCP), General Practice (MRCGP) combines granular systems level understanding of human physiology and pharmacology resulting in an unusual breadth of clinical experience and holistic practice.   Alongside working in the NHS his responsibilities as The Medical Director of several Digital Healthcare organisations have centred on clinical governance, patient safety, regulatory engagement, and managing live clinical operations.  This includes Telemedicine, COVID and Cannabis. He now works at the intersection of human health, the space industry, and environmental exposure, examining both the direct and indirect population-level health implications of expanding space activity which is ever more relevant given recent announcements from Space X.  He sits on the advisory board of the Earth & Space Sustainability Initiative (ESSI) and is involved in working/research groups whose objective is to develop new standards relating to human health in space and terrestrially/satellite ablation and the environment working with experts in geodesy, atmospheric chemistry and physics, spectrum regulation, and insurance risk.  Dr Barber will shortly begin work on the Moonrise project with the Open University and has lectured at Space Park Leicester as part of its space training programme on human health in space and the potential consequences of satellite ablation on the environment and human health.
