Dan is the Chief Innovation Officer at Rio Tinto where he leads the technology and R&D portfolio across the company including the corporate venture capital and growth team. Dan's role is centred around driving innovation at pace, both to accelerate the energy transition and deliver transformational value for Rio. Dan is also building new capabilities to support the company's mission of finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

Dan's career has spanned academia and the natural resources industry. Prior to Rio Tinto, Dan held senior leadership roles across the energy company bp, including group vice president of engineering. He also established and led the emerging and disruptive technology unit at bp, and led the development of the company's net zero carbon ambition and strategy. Dan has been on the board of directors for multiple companies, including currently serving as Non Executive Director on the Ocean Infinity Group Board. Prior to joining industry, Dan pursued post-doctoral research in fluid and structural dynamics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and held a lectureship in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. Dan is a chartered mechanical engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
